Oct 29 - 8th

Students put page 35 in their notebook.

They then did some practice problems relating to physical and chemical change.

We finished by discussing endothermic changes.

We reviewed a brief balancing equation problem.

We then discussed the idea of a catalyst.

Students completed 2 lab experiments to test the idea behind catalysts.

Oct 24 - 8th

Students continued working on notebook page 36. When finished, they showed it to a teacher for initials to show that it looked to be completed correctly.

Students then read page 7-8 in the assigned eText.

When this was completed, they worked on the endothermic/exothermic interactivity.

Oct 24 - PS

Students completed the temperature of products lab.

They then finished the questions on the lab handout.

Some students began working on the worksheet using the book. We will work on this more tomorrow.

Oct 23 - 8th

Students turned in their worksheet.

We discussed the lab from yesterday.

We then played physical/chemical change memory.

Students then started working on the next notebook page.

Oct 23 - PS

Students and I discussed the correct answers to notebook page 35.

We then discussed the demonstration with the glow stick.

Oct 22 - 8th grade

We had a discussion about the molecule questions from the marshmallow activity.

Students then worked on 10 examples of molecules, elements, or compounds.

We then finished with a lab to demonstrate chemical changes.

Homework was to finish the worksheet and read the first 3 pages in the etext Chemical change on Pearson.

Oct 22 - PS

Students worked on page 34 and 35 in their notebook on precipitates.

They also read a brief section about temperature affecting the rate of a reaction and did a simulation.

Homework was to finish the google forms quiz (on google classroom) by midnight on wednesday.

Oct 16 - 8th

Students wrote down their "to do"list on  a post it note and put it in their computer or some other location.

Worksheet is due Thursday and test corrections are due Wednesday by midnight.

We then looked at examples of solutions and mixtures and used their traits to classify them.

Students ended the class by working on Marshmallow molecules.

Oct 16 - PS

Students and I discussed the reaction between baking soda and vinegar.

Students then worked to try and solve the challenge of making a baking soda and vinegar "explosion" that fills the graduated cylinder but does not overflow.

Students put page 32 in notebook from google classroom.

We then discussed homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures.

We also discussed colloids, suspensions, and solutions.

Oct 11 - PS

We went over how to balance chemical equations.

Students then worked on a lab to figure out what the mystery from yesterday was.

Students then looked at a slide show for correct answers from last nights homework (questions 5-8 from activity).

Homework is to attempt the balancing chemical equations worksheet.

We discussed the lesson 4 check.

We then added one note to our pH scale regarding litmus paper.

Students then worked on review assignments for tomorrow's test.

Students checked grades and cleaned out email.

Students took a pre test on chemical changes.

We then discussed physical changes and examples.

We then discussed what happens when a candle burns.

Oct 1 - 8th grade

Students checked their grades and cleaned out email.

Students then went to google classroom to see the next notebook page (28). They used the reading section from friday to help fill in the notebook page.

Students checked their grades and cleaned out their email.

Students found patterns that led them to see that covalent bonds are formed between nonmetals and that ionic bonds are formed between a metal and a nonmetal.

Students then got into groups and worked on their bonding basics papers.

Sept 27 - 8th

Students added periodic table outlines to the front of their foldables.

We then worked through the lesson 3 check together.

We went over correct answers to the Atom Worksheets.

We then discussed the correct answers to last nights covalent bonding practice.

Students then went to google classroom and read about ionic bonding. They then filled out the activity sheet on ionic bonding.

Homework was to complete the practice problems.

Sept 26 - 8th grade

Students read and made a foldable about the characteristics of metals, non metals, and metalloids.

Students then put page 26 in their notebook.

There is a quiz assigned on Pearson Realize. Question 6 needs to be answered on a separate piece of paper and turned in tomorrow.

We had a discussion to finish up covalent bonding and finished going through the handout from yesterday.

students and I then did some practice with covalent bonding.


Students need to complete the practice for homework.

Sept 25 - 8th grade

*We got 6th hour caught up from yesterday*

We reviewed valence electrons and the notebook page.

Students then worked on the valence electron WS.

And sometimes, you learn so much your head hurts!

Students and I discussed the page on valence electrons and how they repeat based on their location on the Periodic table.



We then went over correct answers to the questions from yesterday.

We finished up by going over the basics of covalent bonding.

Sept 24 - 8th

Students practiced filling in the squares of the periodic table.

We then reviewed the issues revolving around the Hindenburg explosion. We discussed the reason for the properties of Hydrogen vs Helium.

Students then worked on notebook page 24. We went over the correct answers to page 24.

6TH HOUR DID NOT HAVE CLASS  DUE TO AN ASSEMBLY.

Students continued working on the list of assignments from last Thursday. Students also were given time to check their grades and clean up their email.

Sept 20 - 8th grade

Students put their periodic table in their notebook.

We then went back and discussed the information that was presented in the squares of the periodic table.

Students did examples of periodic table boxes for practice.

Sept 20 - PS

Students worked on assignments relating to the placement of electrons in energy levels.

These should be completed before class on Tuesday. We have school on Monday, but they will have until Tuesday to finish.

Sept 18 - 8th

Students took a reading check quiz on google classroom.

Students finished their activity from yesterday and we went over correct answers.

We finished by starting a periodic table to identify groups.

Sept 18 - PS

We discussed page 22 in the notebook. Students then looked at ptable.com and we discussed why electron placement gets tricky around the 4th period. This will not be tested, it is just for their info.

Students then played the electron placement game.

Homework for tonight is to watch the reaction videos that were assigned on google classroom.

Sept 17 - 8th

Students cleaned out their email accounts (they were allowed to keep 5 emails, everything else needed to be put into a label or deleted).

We then watched a video describing the patterns in the periodic table.

Students then worked through the periodic table interactivity and answered questions on the handout.

Homework for tonight is to read page 3-8 in the text book.

Sept 17 - PS

Students cleaned out their email account while I passed out papers (water molecule rubric and worksheet on protons, neutrons, and electrons.)

We then discussed the idea of energy levels and electrons in the atom.

Students then completed the Energy Level WS and discussed with a friend.

Sep 14 - 8th

Students put the History of the Atom WS in their notebooks (page 14). They then also put page 18 (It all adds up) and 19 (Brain Work) in their notebook.

We then went over the Interactivity together to begin looking at the Periodic Table.

Students put page 20 in their notebook. The goal and vocab were located on google classroom. The lesson was taken from a handout.

Students then finished the Atomic Mass and Atomic Number worksheet.

Students then read pages 110-118.

Sept 11 - 8th

Students and I reviewed answers to notebook page 15 (review and brain work) from the electron activity.

We then talked about the History of the Atom WS that is due Friday.

Students then took notes on the subatomic particles.

Students had 5 minutes to complete the homework from last night. They were then awarded points if they had it completed.

We discussed the demo from yesterday that used the balloons.

We then discussed information from the periodic table. We found protons, neutrons, electrons, atomic number and atomic mass.

Periodic Table worksheet is due tomorrow.

Sept 10 - 8th grade

We discussed the scientist timeline.

Students were then introduced to the electron cloud model.

Students finished by adding pages to their notebook on the atomic theory and the electron cloud.


Sept 10 - PS

We went over the demonstration of moving electrons from one thing to another. We substituted balloons in for the plastic and had much better success.

Students then worked on notebook pages 14 - 18 on their own. Pages were shared on google classroom.

Sept 7 - 8th grade

Students did their electron activity which involved rolling a die to determine the position of an electron.

Whatever time was remaining was used on their atomic scientist timeline.

Sept 7th - PS

Students turned in projects.

We then went over results of the chapter 1 pre and post test. Students improved the average score by 32%.

Students took a pre test over the periodic table.

We then started discussing protons, neutrons, and electrons.


Sept 6 - 8th

Students worked in groups to finish their Modeling Matter activity.

We then went over the correct answers.

We discussed the term scientific theory and law.

Students began working on their atomic theory scientist foldable.

Students learned about how to study.

We then played a review game.

Students will work on the modeling matter activity after the test tomorrow. Test is on page 2-11.

Sept 4 - PS

Physical students worked on:

1) how to study
2) review for the test tomorrow (page 2-12)
3) the water molecule model

Model is due on friday for full credit and points go down for each day after that.

Students and I discussed the correct answer to page 11 (homework).

Students then took a pretest for our next chapter on Google Classroom.

Students then read 2 pages, also on Google Classroom.

Some students began the water molecule model activity.

Test on Wednesday on page 2 - 11.

We discussed the demonstrations from yesterday.

Students worked on page 10 and put it in their notebooks.

We then spent time organizing their email. Students were also show google keep as a way to write down homework.

Students have homework to finish page 11. We will have a test next Wednesday on notebook page 2 - 11.

Aug 29 - all classes

We went over the questions from the activity about solids.

Students then took a quiz over sections 3 and 4. The read about gases when they were finished.

We then discussed the molecular motion of gases using two demonstrations:
1) balloon and balance (teacher-led)
2) soap bubble (group in lab)

We finished by going over the goals and explaining what we saw about them:
Based on observations of demonstrations and their own experimentation, students will be able to describe gas as matter. 
Students will also be able to describe, on the molecular level, the effect of heating and cooling on the motion of molecules of a gas.

Test will be next Wednesday.

We went over the correct answers to the matter quiz 1.

We then discussed the answers to page 6 and 7.

We finished up by writing page 8 into the notebook. Page was shared through google classroom.

Aug 27 - al classes

We discussed questions on the thermometer assignment. All parts of that assignment (reading, notes, and assessment) are due by 8pm on Tuesday.

Students then worked on questions regarding Activity Sheet on how molecules move in a solid. Students were given a link  to animations and a handout with questions to answer.

We discussed the water molecule worksheet.

Students then did the experiment about how the temperature of water effects the speed of the molecules.

Aug 22nd - all classes

Students completed the reflection statement on the movement of molecules.

We then discussed the correct answers to the review and brain work questions from yesterday.

Students then went to the lab and worked with moving water drops again.

We finished with a brief discussion of procedures during emergency situations.



Aug 21- all classes

Students discussed ways to find science class information on line.

We then did a demonstration of food coloring diffusing through water.

Students then worked on notebook pages.

Aug 20 - all classes

students got logged in to our google classroom account. There is a different code for each class, so you will have to see Mr. B for the code for your particular class.

Students then took a pre-test to show how much they know about our first topic.

We then discussed chemistry and matter. And...OUR KIDS CAN THINK!

We finished by moving to the lab to do some work with water.

Homework is to have a notebook and folder by Tuesday.

Aug 17 - all classes

Classes received class expectations. We discussed these and students were asked to take them home for a parent signature. Students also worked on a back to school survey. We finished with a post-it note activity about positives, questions, and concerns.
